Description
The first thing we do is dig out the kennel 12 inches deep (10 wheelbarrow loads). Then we line the perimeter of the kennel with 8 inch tall cinder blocks to prevent dogs from digging out of the kennel.
Next we load up the kennel with 4 loads of river rock. This provides excellent drainage inside the kennel which is a key to being sanitary.
The first 2 loads we use small to medium sized river rock and then spread that out evenly in the kennel.
The last 2 loads of river rock are large rocks. This discourages dogs from digging. If they're able to dig down to this level they'll hit large river rock and will immediately lose interest.
Now we top it off with 6 loads of pee-gravel. This provides a nice thick soft sanitary bed for the dogs to lounge on.
Lot's of pee-gravel....and more pee-gravel. We hate the cement slab floor approach, so that's why we go to all this work.
After about 3 loads it stops filling in the cracks in the river rock and begins smoothing out.
And now it's done. There is about 6 inches of solid pee-gravel on top of 6 inches of river-rock on top of naturally self-cleansing dirt.
Because of how they're constructed every kennel maintains sanitation naturally. But everyday and anytime a dog has an accident in the kennel the pee-gravel is sprayed thoroughly with a mild bleach/water solution and worked through with a rake.
